Indications And Clinical Uses: Cream: Topical relief of pain and itching; also for the treatment and prevention of infections in minor cuts, wounds, and burns.

Ear Drops: The prevention of exacerbations and treatment of infection due to susceptible organisms, relief of pain and itching associated with otitis externa, including “swimmer’s ear”, otitis media (if tympanic membrane is perforated), postoperative aural cavities, furunculosis.

Contra-Indications: Hypersensitivity to any of the components.

Precautions: As with other antibiotic preparations, prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Appropriate measures should be taken if this occurs.

If burning or itching increases or persists, discontinue use and consult a physician.

Although the otic solution does not require refrigeration, some patients may prefer to warm the medication before using and they should be cautioned to avoid heating the solution above body temperature so as to prevent loss of antibiotic potency.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Overdose: Symptoms and Treatment: Treatment is symptomatic.

Dosage And Administration: Cream: A small quantity of the cream may be applied 2 to 5 times daily, as required. If the skin condition permits, the cream should be gently rubbed into the affected areas.

Ear Drops: After cleansing and thorough but gentle drying, instill 3 or 4 drops into the infected ear, 3 or 4 times daily. For infants and children, 2 or 3 drops are suggested. Solution may be applied by saturating a gauze or cotton wick which may be left in the canal for 24 to 48 hours, keeping the wick moist by adding a few drops of solution as required.

Availability And Storage: Cream: Each g contains: polymyxin B sulfate 10 000 units, gramicidin 250 µg (0.25 mg), lidocaine HCl 50 mg, in a smooth, white, water washable vanishing cream base with a pH of approximately 5.0. Nonmedicinal ingredients: mineral oil, paraben, petrolatum, polysorbate, propylene glycol, sodium hydroxide, water and wax. Tubes of 15 and 30 g.

Ear Drops: Each mL contains: polymyxin B sulfate 10 000 units, lidocaine HCl 50 mg (5%). Nonmedicinal ingredients: cupric sulfate, hydrochloric acid, propylene glycol and water. Plastic dropper bottles of 10 mL.

Store between 15 to 25°C.
