Diclectin (Doxylamine – Pyridoxine HCl)

DICLECTIN®

Duchesnay

Doxylamine Succinate – Pyridoxine HCl

Antinauseant against Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy

Action And Clinical Pharmacology: The action of Diclectin is due to 2 unrelated compounds. Doxylamine succinate, an antihistamine, provides the antinauseant and antiemetic activity; pyridoxine HCl provides a supplement of vitamin B6 to prevent a possible pyridoxine deficiency during pregnancy. Also, studies have shown that pyridoxine itself could have an antinauseant activity. The onset of the antiemetic activity of Diclectin is delayed by a special coating of the tablet; a dose taken at night will be effective in the morning, the time when it is most needed.

Indications And Clinical Uses: In cases of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.

Precautions: Occupational Hazards: Due to a risk of drowsiness, Diclectin must be prescribed with caution to automobile drivers and machine operators.

It must also be used with caution in combination with alcohol and other CNS depressing drugs or with epileptic patients.

Adverse Reactions: The adverse effects are those produced by the 2 ingredients. Doxylamine succinate may cause drowsiness, vertigo, nervousness, epigastric pain, headache, palpitation, diarrhea, disorientation, irritability, convulsions, urinary retention or insomnia. Pyridoxine is a vitamin that is generally recognized as having no adverse effects.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Overdose: Symptoms: Signs and symptoms of intoxication are restlessness, dryness of mouth, dilated pupils, sleepiness, vertigo, mental confusion and tachycardia.

Treatment: If treatment is needed, it consists of gastric lavage, emetics or activated charcoal and a symptomatic treatment.

Dosage And Administration: 2 delayed release tablets at bedtime. Add 1 delayed release tablet in the morning and 1 delayed release tablet in mid-afternoon when nausea or vomiting occurs during the day or in severe cases.

Availability And Storage: Each white, coated, delayed release tablet contains: doxylamine succinate USP 10 mg and pyridoxine HCl 10 mg. Tartrazine-free. Bottles of 100 and 1 000.
