Pyrvinium Pamoate

Oxyuriasis Therapy

Indications And Clinical Uses: Treatment of pinworms.

Contra-Indications: In patients who have previously exhibited hypersensitivity to the drug.

Precautions: To forestall undue concern and help avoid accidental staining, patients and parents should be advised of the staining properties of pyrvinium. Parents and patients should be informed that pyrvinium will color the stool a bright red. This is not harmful to the patient. If emesis occurs, the vomitus will probably be colored red and will stain most materials. Because pinworm infections are easily transferred from person to person, meticulous hygiene is essential.

Pregnancy: Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted. It is also not known whether pyrvinium can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or if it can affect reproduction capacity. Pyrvinium should be given to a pregnant woman only if the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.

Lactation: It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of drug therapy to the mother.

Children: Pyrvinium should not be used in children under 10 kg except on the advice of a physician.

Adverse Reactions: Nausea, vomiting, cramping, diarrhea and hypersensitivity reactions (photosensitization and other allergic reactions) have been reported. The gastrointestinal reactions occur more often in older children and adults who have received large doses.

Dosage And Administration: A single dose of 50 mg/10 kg. Take immediately after a meal. If necessary, the dose may be repeated in 2 to 3 weeks.
