Therapeutic Nutrient

Description: PediaSure liquid nutrition for children is an isotonic enteral nutritional product designed to provide complete balanced nutrition for children 1 to 10 years of age. Fed either by tube or orally, PediaSure can be used as total enteral nutrition support or as a supplement.

Indications And Clinical Uses: Enteral nutritional support by tube or by mouth for children 1 to 10 years of age. Support for growth. Support recovery from trauma or severe illness. Feed long-term when chronic conditions prevent normal feeding i.e., congenital anomalies or mental retardation, failure to thrive, malnutrition.

Precautions: Not for parenteral administration. Not intended for infants under 1 year of age unless specified by a physician.

Dosage And Administration: The nutrient concentrations in 1 100 mL to 1 300 mL of this product meet or exceed 100% of the RNI for proteins, vitamins and minerals for children 1 to 10 years of age.

Oral feeding: As total or supplemental nutrition with or between meals. One to 6 cans daily: 984 kJ to 5 904 kJ (235 kcal to 1 410 kcal). When used as the sole daily feeding: should be administered to meet individual requirements.

Tube feeding: Follow physician’s or dietitian’s directions. When initiating feeding, the flow-rate, volume and dilution are dependent on patient tolerance; care should be taken to avoid contamination of this product during preparation and administration. Additional fluid requirements should be met by giving water orally with or after feedings, or when flushing the feeding tube.

Special Instructions for Tube feeding: Conservative recommendations for initiating tube feedings are to begin with a formula diluted to hypotonic concentration (1/4 to 1/2 strength). If the patient tolerates the feeding, the volume is advanced over several hours until fluid maintenance is achieved. Once the volume is stabilized, the energy density of the formula is increased. However, children will frequently tolerate feedings initiated with full-strength isotonic or nearly isotonic formulas when the rate is adjusted to promote tolerance. Feedings often are advanced every 4 to 8 hours or, with more conservative management, every 12 hours. If the patient cannot tolerate an adequate volume of formula, supplemental parenteral fluids may be required.

Availability And Storage: Each 235 mL ready-to-use can contains: water, maltodextrin, sucrose, sodium caseinate, high oleic safflower oil, soy oil, fractionated coconut oil, minerals (calcium phosphate tribasic, magnesium chloride, potassium citrate, sodium molybdate, chromium chloride, sodium selenite, potassium phosphate dibasic, potassium chloride, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, cupric sulfate, potassium iodine), whey protein concentrate, natural and artificial flavor, mono and diglycerides, soy lecithin, choline chloride, vitamins (ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopheryl acetate, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamin A palmitate, folic acid, biotin, phylloquinone, vitamin D3, cyanocobalamin), calcium carrageenan, taurine and L-carnitine.
