Sterculia

Bulk Laxative

Indications And Clinical Uses: Sterculia is used as a bulk laxative, since by taking up moisture it increases the volume of the feces and promotes peristalsis. Ten mL of sterculia provide dietary bulk equivalent to 2 kg of fresh vegetables. It provides gentle relief of occasional constipation. Produces bowel movement in 12 to 72 hours.

Precautions: As with all hygroscopic laxatives, it is important to stress the need to ingest adequate quantities of water immediately with the preparation. It may be unwise if the patient is elderly or debilitated, to suggest taking the preparation prior to retiring.

Do not use in the presence of abdominal pain, nausea, fever or vomiting.

Do not take within 2 hours of any other medication as the desired effect of the other medicine may be reduced.

Dosage And Administration: Adults: 1 or 2 sachets, once or twice daily or as directed by the physician. Children: Consult the physician for children under 12 years of age.

Place the dry granules on the tongue, in small quantities if necessary. Swallow the granules with a full glass (250 mL) of water or other liquid, without chewing.
