Isocal HN

ISOCAL® HN

Mead Johnson

Therapeutic Nutrient

Indications And Clinical Uses: A complete liquid diet formulated to provide well balanced nutrition when used as the sole source of nourishment, particularly in tube fed patients who have normal digestive function.

The non-protein-calorie-to-nitrogen ratio of Isocal HN is indicated for patients with burns, sepsis, major injury and surgery. When protein needs are increased with increasing levels of stress; e.g., protein requirement for basic maintenance is 1 g/kg IBW. For trauma patients with surgery, surgery patients with sepsis or tumor with multiple therapy, protein requirement is 1.75 g/kg IBW.

Precautions: Give additional water as needed to meet the patient’s requirements. Particular attention should be given to water supply for comatose and unconscious patients and others who cannot express the usual sensations of thirst. Additional water is important also when renal concentrating ability is impaired, when there is extensive breakdown of tissue protein, or when water requirements are high, as in fever.

Dosage And Administration: Isocal HN can be initiated at full strength. The rate (mL/hour) may be adjusted for acutely ill patients to enhance tolerance. Tube feedings should be at room temperature and may be given by slow continuous drip or at intervals. Bedside reservoir hang time for Isocal HN should not exceed 6 to 8 hours.

Unopened Isocal HN should be stored at room temperature. After opening, unused Isocal HN should be covered and refrigerated and used within 48 hours.
