Anthelmintic

Indications And Clinical Uses: Pinworm or roundworm infestations.

Contra-Indications: Impaired renal or hepatic function, convulsive disorders, or a history of hypersensitivity reactions to piperazine or its salts.

Precautions: In children, avoid prolonged or repeated treatment in excess of that recommended due to potential neurotoxicity.

Pregnancy: Safety of this drug for use during pregnancy has not been established.

If CNS, significant gastrointestinal, or hypersensitivity reactions occur, discontinue the drug. In patients with severe malnutrition, or anemia, exercise appropriate caution.

Adverse Reactions: The following reactions have been reported, usually due to excessive dosage:

Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea.

CNS: rarely, and usually in patients with neurological disturbances or in overdose; headache, vertigo, ataxia, tremors, choreiform movement, muscular weakness, hyporeflexia, paresthesia, blurred vision, paralytic strabismus, convulsion, EEG abnormalities, sense of detachment, memory defect.

Hypersensitivity: urticaria, erythema multiforme, purpura, fever, arthralgia.

Dosage And Administration: One day treatment: Granules: 2 to 8 years (13.5 to 27.5 kg): 1 packet; 8 to 14 years (27.6 to 41 kg): 1 packet twice in 1 day; over 14 years and adults (over 41 kg): 1 packet 3 times in 1 day. Dissolve contents of 1 packet in 57 mL (2 oz or 1/4 glass) of water, milk or fruit juice. Repeat dosage in 2 weeks’ time.

Suspension: Under 2 years: 5 mL (1 teaspoonful) 3 times in 1 day; 2 to 8 years: 10 mL (2 teaspoonfuls) 2 times in 1 day; 8 to 14 years: 10 mL (2 teaspoonfuls) 3 times in 1 day; over 14 years and adults: 15 mL (3 teaspoonfuls) 3 times in 1 day. To be given in divided dosage, as suggested above, over a period of 12 hours. Repeat this dosage in 2 weeks’ time.

Availability And Storage: Granules: Each single dose foil packet of orange-flavored granules contains: piperazine adipate 2 g. Energy: 13.8 kJ (3.3 kcal)/2 g.
Suspension: Each 5 mL of raspberry-flavored liquid contains: piperazine adipate 600 mg. Energy: 128.9 kJ (30.8 kcal)/5 mL. Sodium:
