Magnesium Hydroxide – Aluminum Hydroxide

Antacid

Indications And Clinical Uses: Provides fast relief of heartburn and acid indigestion.

Contra-Indications: Alkalosis, hypermagnesemia, where distention may be due to partial or complete obstruction; not recommended for severely debilitated patients or those with impaired renal function.

Manufacturers’ Warnings In Clinical States: Do not take more than 16 tablets or 80 mL during a 24-hour period. Do not take for more than 2 weeks or if symptoms recur, unless directed by a physician. Do not take if you suffer from kidney disease except on your physician’s advice. Do not take within 2 hours of another medicine, because the effectiveness of the other medicine may be altered. Antacids can interfere with the absorption of iron preparations and/or tetracyclines.

Precautions: Avoid concomitant use with tetracycline antibiotics and/or iron preparations.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Overdose: Symptoms: In the presence of renal insufficiency, accumulation of magnesium in circulation may cause CNS depression. Chronic ingestion may lead to phosphorus deficiency in presence of low phosphorus diet.

Treatment: Symptomatic.

Dosage: Adults: 10 to 20 mL of suspension or 2 to 4 tablets or caplets taken 4 times daily as needed between meals and at bedtime or as directed by the physician.

Availability And Storage: Caplets: Each light blue, oval, convex, beveled edged, opaque, film-coated, mint-flavored caplet, plain on one side, intagliated DIOVOL on the other, contains: dried aluminum hydroxide gel 200 mg and magnesium hydroxide 200 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: alumina, cellulose, cornstarch, FD&C Blue No. 2, FD&C Red No. 3, flavor, gelatin, glycerin, magnesium stearate, propylene glycol and titanium dioxide.
Suspension: Each 5 mL of opaque, white suspension with a mint flavor and a peppermint and spearmint odor (pH: 7.3 to 8.5) contains: aluminum hydroxide 165 mg (as aluminum hydroxide compressed gel) and magnesium hydroxide 200 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: alcohol (1%), calcium cyclamate, flavors, guar gum, hydrogen peroxide, parabens, simethicone and sorbitol. Energy: 9.6 kJ (2.3 kcal).
Tablets: Each round, flat, white tablet with beveled edges, intagliated DIOVOL on one side, contains: aluminum hydroxide and magnesium carbonate co-dried gel 300 mg (equivalent to aluminum hyroxide 184 mg) and magnesium hydroxide 100 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: calcium cyclamate, cellulose, D&C yellow No. 10 (fruit-flavored tablet), flavor, gelatin, magnesium stearate, mannitol, sorbitol, starch (corn) and talc. Energy: 7.5 kJ (1.8 kcal). Sodium:
