Local Anti-infective – Analgesic

Indications And Clinical Uses: The symptomatic treatment of mild infection and relief of pain in gum, pharyngeal, tonsillar and other oral disorders such as aphthous ulcers, stomatitis and gingivitis. May also be used postoperatively in tonsillectomy, dental surgery and tooth extraction.

Contra-Indications: Benzocaine sensitivity.

Precautions: Severe or persistent sore throat accompanied by high fever, headache, nausea and vomiting may be serious, consult a physician promptly. Do not use for more than 2 days or administer to children under 2 years of age unless directed by a physician.

If benzocaine sensitization develops, discontinue Bionet administration.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Overdose: Benzocaine has a low toxicity while the probable human lethal dose for Bicetonium is estimated to lie in the range of 50 to 500 mg/kg.Symptoms: Overdosage of benzocaine will produce giddiness, motor unrest, cardiac palpitations, respiratory difficulties, tremors, clonic convulsions, arterial hypotension, dilated pupils and pallor. Quaternary ammonium salts ingested in large quantities evince the following symptomatology: burning of mouth and throat, apprehension, restlessness, confusion, weakness, CNS depression, muscular weakness with asphyxia.

Treatment: If respiration fails, start artificial respiration. 0.5 mL of 1:1 000 epinephrine given i.v. may be needed to improve circulation, or large quantities of milk or gastric lavage, if it can be performed promptly. In children, induce emesis and if there is no immediate response, use gastric lavage. Avoid alcohol.

Dosage: Allow lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth. Repeat every 2 hours or as required, until infection subsides.

Availability And Storage: Each white, round, even, biconvex, uncoated, peppermint flavored lozenge, contains: Bicetonium 5 mg (cetyldimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride) and benzocaine 7.5 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: flavor, magnesium stearate, povidone, sucrose and tragacanth. Energy: 22 kJ (5.2 kcal). Alcohol-, gluten-, sodium- and tartrazine-free. Push-through packages of 16. Bottles of 500.
