Indications And Clinical Uses: Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia.
Contra-Indications: Hemosiderosis, hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia.
Precautions: Oral iron preparations may aggravate existing peptic ulcer, regional enteritis and ulcerative colitis.
Iron compounds taken orally can impair the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. Antacids given concomitantly with iron compounds decrease iron absorption. When iron drops are given to babies some darkening of the gum tissue directly surrounding the teeth may occur. This is not serious and may be removed by rubbing the teeth with baking soda. Discoloring will fade with discontinued use.
Adverse Reactions: Mild gastrointestinal upsets may rarely occur in iron-sensitive patients.
Dosage And Administration: Drops: Prophylactic Dosage: up to 6 years, 0.5 mL daily; older children 1 mL daily. Therapeutic Dosage: Give 3 times a day. Up to 2 years, 1 to 2 mL; 2 to 6 years, 2 mL; older children, 2 to 3 mL. Give in water or fruit juice (not milk) and preferably between meals.
Syrup: Prophylactic Dosage: Give once daily. Children up to 6 years, 1.25 mL; older children, 2.5 mL. Therapeutic Dosage: Give 3 times a day. Up to 2 years, 2.5 to 5 mL; 2 to 6 years, 5 mL; older children, 5 to 10 mL; adults, 10 to 15 mL.
Availability And Storage: Drops: Each mL of liquid contains: ferrous sulfate 75 mg (equivalent to 15 mg elemental iron). Nonmedicinal ingredients: artificial flavoring, citric acid anhydrous, ethyl alcohol, purified water, sodium bisulfite, sorbitol solution and sucrose. Alcohol: 1.6%. Energy: 6.93 kJ (1.65 kcal).
Syrup: Each 5 mL of syrup contains: ferrous sulfate 150 mg (equivalent to 30 mg elemental iron). Nonmedicinal ingredients: artificial flavoring, citric acid anhydrous, purified water, sodium bisulfite, sodium chloride, sorbitol solution, sucrose and sulfuric acid.
