Isocal

ISOCAL®

Mead Johnson

Therapeutic Nutrient

Indications And Clinical Uses: Nutritionally complete and well-balanced to provide the total dietary needs of most tube-fed patients.

Precautions: Give additional water as needed to meet the patient’s requirements. Particular attention should be given to water supply for comatose and unconscious patients and others who cannot express the usual sensations of thirst. Additional water is important also when renal concentrating ability is impaired, when there is extensive breakdown of tissue protein, or when water requirements are high, as in fever.

Dosage And Administration: Not for parenteral use. Isocal should be administered by slow, continuous drip. It is ready-to-feed, and may be fed initially at full strength. The rate (mL/hour) may be adjusted for acutely ill patients to enhance tolerance. Tube feedings should be at room temperature. Bedside reservoir hang time for Isocal should not exceed 6 to 8 hours. Additional water should be supplied to maintain adequate urinary output. Shake well before using. Unused Isocal should be covered, kept refrigerated, and used within 48 hours of opening.

All current commercially available standard tube feedings are formulated to be low in sodium. This allows for flexibility while still meeting the requirements for a standard patient. A protocol to add sodium should be established and followed for patients on long-term tube feeds or for patients with unresolving diarrhea.

Availability And Storage: Isocal is an isotonic, nutritionally balanced tube feeding. It provides 100% Canadian adult RNI for all vitamins and minerals in 1 250 mL and is formulated specifically for tube fed patients to assure acceptance and tolerance. Each ready to use 250 mL with easy open top, or 945 mL can contains: water, maltodextrin, caseinates (from casein and sodium and calcium hydroxides), canola oil, MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides 40% of total fat), sugar, soya protein isolate, potassium citrate, calcium phosphate dibasic, sodium citrate, magnesium chloride, calcium citrate, potassium chloride, magnesium phosphate dibasic, artificial vanilla flavor, sodium ascorbate, calcium chloride, lecithin, mono & diglycerides, choline chloride, carrageenan and essential vitamins and minerals (selenium, chromium, molybdenum). Glucose-, gluten-, lactose- and tartrazine-free. Each can supplies 419 kJ (100 kcal)/100 mL. Osmolality: 300 mOsm/kg water. Cases of 24 (250 mL), cases of 12 (945 mL).
