THEO-BRONC® Rougier Pharma Theophylline–Potassium Iodide–Guaifenesin–Mepyramine Maleate Bronchodilator–Expectorant
Indications And Clinical Uses:
For the symptomatic relief of reversible bronchoconstriction associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and related bronchospastic disorders and where expectoration is required.
Contra-Indications:
Hyperthyroidism, active peptic ulcer, sensitivity to any of the components, pregnancy, in coronary artery disease where myocardial stimulation might prove harmful.
Precautions:
Inquire before administration, particularly in young children (less than 7 years old), if a derivative of theophylline has been administered (parenteral or rectal route) in the previous 12 hours. It is strongly recommended to maintain an 8 to 12 hour interval between doses because of possible accumulation. In some patients prolonged iodide therapy may lead to hypothyroidism.
Use with caution in cases of hypertension, severe organic diseases or known sensitivity to guaifenesin.
A metabolite of guaifenesin has been found to produce an apparent increase in urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, and guaifenesin could thus interfere with the diagnosis of the carcinoid syndrome. Asthmatic patients being evaluated for the carcinoid syndrome should therefore discontinue any preparation containing guaifenesin for 24 hours before the collection of urine specimens for the determination of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid.
Adverse Reactions:
Gastric upset, drowsiness and dizziness may occur.
Dosage And Administration:
Adults: 10 mL 4 times/day. Children 6 years and over: 2.5 to 5 mL 3 times a day, at 8-hour intervals. Children under 6 years: 2.5 mL/6.8 kg, 2 to 3 times a day at 8-hour intervals.
The following mg equivalents facilitate changing from one xanthine preparation to another: theophylline anhydrous 100 mg=aminophylline 118 mg=diprophylline 141 mg=oxtriphylline 156 mg=theophylline sodium glycinate 200 mg.
Availability And Storage:
Each 5 mL of clear, colorless, bitter tasting solution contains: guaifenesin 50 mg, potassium iodide 80 mg, theophylline (base) 35 mg and mepyramine maleate 6 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: alcohol, inverted sugar/honey, menthol, purified water, sucrose, wild cherry and citrus flavoring. Energy: 56.6 kJ (13.33 kcal)/5 mL. Bottles of 250 mL.
